420 Myths & Facts
420 is one of those terms, that those that consider
themselves in the know, understand the term, but don't
exactly know what it means.
Earliest known reference of 420 was in 1971 as
a group of high school students used the term as
a time to meet up and smoke. So 420 is now used
as a generic way of someone saying that like to
use marijuana.
420 Myths
420 is not the penal code for marijuana in California,
420 is actually listed as a code referring to obstructing
entry on public land. It's also been said that 420
is the police code for marijuana smoking in progress
in New York and Los Angeles and this is simply not
true.
Some people say that 420 refers the to the number
of chemical compounds in marijuana. There are not
420 chemical compounds in marijuana but only 315.
420 the Day of Death?
Others say that famous musicians died on 420, April
20th, like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, or Jim Morrison.
Although these performers were strongly immersed in
drug use during their brief lifetimes, they didn't
pass away on 420.
I've heard it said that 420 is the best day to
plant a hemp plant, does this make sense to you?
It's obviously false.
420 Truth
What about this one, Albert Hoffman took the first
Acid trip at 420 on the 19th of April in 1943? This
one is true, although it was on the 16th of April,
strangely enough according to his lab notes, he did
take the first trip at 420.
Last one we've heard of is that the Grateful Dead
while touring always stayed in room 420, according
to the Grateful Dead spokesman Dennis McNally this
is false.
420 Wrap-up
420 has found a place in the English language, as
evident in various movies, company names, and hemp
events around the country. 420 while it can't be attributed
to anything for sure, 420 definitely is a known commodity.
