The insert is an important part to my volcano because I notice that when I don't use it the vapors escape from the filling chamber. I would suggest not to ever use the volcano without the chamber insert, it will just be all bad. I had to recently purchase a second insert because I was not cleaning mine regularly like I should have.
I would suggest making sure you clean your insert often if you want to get optimal use out of it. I used just some rubbing alcohol and cotton balls to clean mine. I love my volcano vaporizer and I must say it just wouldn't be efficient without the filling chamber insert.
