THREE MATERIALS, THREE KINDS OF DEVICE

The single most useful thing to know is that vaporizers are built around what they heat. A device made for oil cartridges will not take flower, and a dry herb chamber will not handle concentrate. Choosing by material first removes most of the confusion.

Oil cartridges use a 510 battery: the cartridge holds the oil and the coil, the battery just supplies power. Concentrate goes in a dab pen or e-rig with its own chamber and coil. Dry flower needs a herb chamber that heats the material without burning it.

HOW A DRY HERB VAPORIZER DIFFERS

It heats ground flower to the point where the active compounds turn to vapor but below the point of combustion. That is the whole distinction from smoking, and it is why grind and packing matter so much: airflow through the chamber is what carries the heat.

Conduction devices heat by direct contact with the chamber wall. Convection pulls hot air through the material. Convection is generally more even and more flavorful; conduction is usually cheaper and faster to heat.

WHERE TO START

If you use cartridges, a 510 battery is the whole decision. If you are on concentrate, a dab pen is the portable route and an e-rig the countertop one. For flower, decide portable or desktop first, then temperature control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dry herb vaporizer?

A device that heats ground flower hot enough to release vapor but below the point of combustion, so you inhale vapor rather than smoke. That temperature ceiling is the entire difference from smoking.

How does a dry herb vaporizer work?

It heats a packed chamber either by direct contact with the chamber wall (conduction) or by drawing hot air through the material (convection). Your draw pulls the vapor out through a mouthpiece.

How do you use a dry herb vaporizer?

Grind the material to a medium consistency, pack the chamber so it is full but not compressed, choose a temperature, and let it finish heating before drawing. Slow steady draws produce more vapor than hard fast ones.

What is the difference between conduction and convection?

Conduction heats by contact with the chamber wall — cheaper, faster to heat, and it needs a stir partway through. Convection pulls hot air through the material for a more even extraction and better flavor, usually at a higher price.

Can you use one vaporizer for flower and concentrate?

Only if it is explicitly built for both. Chambers are designed around one material, and putting concentrate in a herb chamber usually ruins it. Some devices take swappable chambers instead.

What is the difference between a 510 battery and a dab pen?

A 510 battery only supplies power — the oil and the coil live in the cartridge you screw on. A dab pen has its own chamber and coil that you load with concentrate directly.

How fine should you grind for a vaporizer?

Medium — fine enough that heat reaches all of it, coarse enough that air still moves through. Ground too fine it packs tight and restricts the draw; too coarse and the outside vaporizes while the center does not.

What temperature should you vape dry herb at?

Lower temperatures favor flavor and produce lighter vapor; higher ones produce denser vapor and extract faster. Starting low and stepping up through a session gets more out of the same material than starting high.

How do you clean a vaporizer?

Let it cool, empty the chamber, and brush out the residue. Wipe the mouthpiece and any screen with isopropyl alcohol, and let everything dry fully before reassembling. Never submerge the battery section.

Are portable or desktop vaporizers better?

Desktop units deliver more consistent heat and bigger volume because they are not working to a battery budget. Portables trade some of that for going with you. It is a use-case decision, not a quality one.
