Match the joint, then the length. Measure from the bottom of the joint to just above the base of the piece. A stem that does not reach the water provides no filtration.

Look at the piece. If the joint opening receives a part, you need male. If the part slides over it, you need female. The bowl and downstem are always opposite genders.
