Chillums

A chillum is a small straight pipe with a bowl at one end and no carb hole. You draw from the opposite end. It is the simplest pipe design and among the oldest.

A one hitter is a chillum sized for a single draw. The names are used interchangeably, though one hitter usually implies the narrower, more discreet shape sometimes made to resemble a cigarette.

Pack the bowl end lightly, light it while drawing from the other end, and clear it in one or two pulls. There is no carb to cover, which is what makes it the simplest pipe to use.

A dugout is a small case holding a one hitter alongside a sealed compartment for ground flower. You twist the pipe into the compartment to pack it, so everything travels together.

They can be, because there is no water and very little distance for the smoke to cool. A longer chillum helps. So does packing lightly rather than filling the bowl.

Soak in isopropyl with coarse salt and push a pipe cleaner through the channel. Because the airpath is short and narrow it clogs faster than a larger pipe, so clean it more often.

They are the most discreet pipe format. Most are under four inches, they have no protruding bowl and they disappear into a pocket. A dugout adds a case that hides it completely.

Glass tastes cleaner. Silicone survives being sat on, which matters for something this small that lives in a pocket. If it travels, silicone is the sensible choice.
