Grinders

An even grind burns and vaporizes far more consistently than material broken up by hand. It also stops flower packing down in a bowl or chamber, which is the usual cause of restricted airflow.

A four piece has a grinding chamber, a mesh screen, a collection chamber and a kief catcher at the bottom. The screen lets ground material through while separating out the finer pollen.

Two piece grinders are cheaper, simpler and easier to clean. Four piece grinders separate the ground material and collect kief. If you grind regularly, the four piece is worth it.

Aluminum teeth stay sharp indefinitely and the body cleans easily. Wood looks better and is gentler on the material, but the teeth wear down over time and it absorbs moisture.

Empty it, brush the teeth and screen, then soak the metal parts in isopropyl if resin has built up. A blocked screen is the usual reason a grinder stops separating properly.

Medium to fine, but not powder. Fine grinds increase the surface area heat can reach, which matters in a vaporizer. Too fine and it packs down and blocks the airpath.

They help if twisting is uncomfortable or if you grind larger amounts at once. For everyday use a good hand grinder is faster and has nothing to charge.
