The atomizer is the heating element — a coil, usually wrapped around or set into quartz or ceramic, that turns concentrate or liquid into vapor. It is the part that does the actual work, and the part that wears out.

It means the battery cannot detect a heating element. The circuit between the battery and the coil is broken, so the device refuses to fire rather than damage itself. It is a connection fault far more often than a dead device.

Unscrew the cartridge or coil and reseat it without overtightening. Clean the threads and the center contact pin with a dry cotton swab. If the center pin sits flush, ease it up very slightly. Then test a different cartridge to work out which half is at fault.

The battery has detected a short circuit in the coil and shut off to protect itself. It usually means the coil has failed internally, or residue has bridged the contact. Replace the coil rather than trying to run through it.

Replace it when the flavor goes flat or burnt, the vapor thins, or the coil is visibly darkened and will not clean up. That is driven by how hard it is run, not by a calendar.

Anywhere from days to weeks depending on voltage, how much residue is left on it, and whether it is ever fired dry. Running at the highest setting shortens it dramatically.

Let it cool, then wipe the chamber with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol to lift residue. Never soak a coil — the heating element and its contacts are inside the assembly. Cleaning extends a coil's life; it does not revive a burnt one.

Usually the coil was fired before it was saturated. Load it, let it sit a moment so the material reaches the wick or chamber, then start with short low-voltage pulls. A coil burnt in the first session tastes wrong for the rest of its life.

Load a small amount, wait a moment for it to settle onto the coil, then take a few short draws at a low setting before running it normally. Priming is what stops the first pull scorching a dry element.
