1. Select The Proper Dab Tool For Your Concentrate

First things first, if you want to use a dab tool efficiently, you’ll first have to make sure you have the right tip shape for the specific consistency of your concentrate.

Because extracts range from runny oils to rocky shatter, picking the right tool tip is essential to keeping your dabbing setup operating without frustrating messes. As you want to be able to control your dosage, having the right tool is essential.

The main difference is that instead of scraping a tool against your banger, you simply hold the hot knife over the bucket, press the button, and watch the wax instantly slide off the warm tip into the bowl. No scraping, no mess, and zero wasted wax left stuck to the tool!

Traditional Metal Dab Tools:

• Use physical force to load

Electric Hot Knives:

In our opinion both types of dab tools have their time and place, even if hot knives do offer a demonstrably easier time. Sometimes having the reliability of a ready to go metal dab tool just scratches that itch.  

Ultimately it comes down to your own personal preference, with each offering their own fun advantages. In fact many experienced dabbers have both in their collection, switching between the two types as the situation calls for. 

3. Loading a Torch-Powered Banger (Hot Drop)

When using a traditional quartz banger heated by a butane torch, you will be performing a "Hot Drop."

This means you’ll go about heating your empty banger first, letting it cool to your ideal temperature, and only then after all that applying your wax with your chosen type of dab tool.

Proper Hot Drop Technique:

• Scoop a small amount of concentrate (around the size of a grain of rice) onto your tool tip.
  
• Heat your banger with the torch and let it cool down to temp.
  
• If using a metal tool: Lower the tip into the banger and gently touch it against the warm bottom floor. Twist the tool slowly to melt the wax off completely.
  
• If using a hot knife: Hover the ceramic tip inside the banger, press the heat button, and let the wax drop off naturally.
  
• Quickly remove the tool and place your carb cap on top to trap the vapor.

As always, going slow and avoiding aggressive scraping is the best course of action. Scraping metal tools against hot quartz can leave permanent micro scratches that ruin flavor over time.

4. Loading an E-Rig (Cold Start)

If you are using an electronic dab rig (like the Puffco Peak or Carta), or a wax pen, the process is reversed. You will be performing a "Cold Start."

This means you load your concentrates into the ceramic chamber *before* activating any heat.

Proper Cold Start Technique:

• Scoop your rice-sized dab onto the tool.
  
• Carefully lower the tool into the completely cold e-rig chamber.
  
• Gently wipe the wax off onto the center floor of the chamber (Hot knives are incredible here, as you just press the button and drop it without touching the delicate ceramic walls!).
  
• Place your carb cap on, then activate the e-rig's heating cycle.

Because e-rig atomizers are fragile, using a hot knife prevents you from accidentally snapping a ceramic heating plate by pressing down too hard with a metal tool.

5. Wipe Your Tool Clean Right After Use

Once your session is finished, we highly recommend taking the time to immediately wipe down your dab tool to avoid sticky buildup. Wipe the tool while the leftover wax is still slightly warm and pliable.

This is by far one of the most important and effective methods of keeping your dabbing gear operating at 100%, preventing cross contamination of flavors in the immediate and long term. While it can feel like a chore at times, it makes a huge difference.

Post Session Cleaning Checklist:

• Wipe the tip of your metal tool or hot knife with a dry paper towel immediately after loading.
  
• Use an isopropyl alcohol wipe at the end of the night to remove thin, sticky residue.
  
• Avoid using sharp blades to scrape dried wax off an electric hot knife, as you can easily crack the ceramic heating tip.
