Wax Pen Troubleshooting Quick Guide

In a rush to get back to your session? Here is a fast breakdown covering the essential steps to diagnosing and fixing your wax pen:

1. Check Chamber Connection For Wax Leakage

If your battery is fully charged but the light blinks rapidly when you try to hit it, or if it just produces zero vapor, you are most likely dealing with a connection issue that's preventing heating. 

In order for your wax pen to work properly, the chamber and the battery need to be able to "talk" to each other. However when wax leakage and leftovers start to seep into these connections, it can lead to both sides saying "can you hear me now" and not getting any answer. 

This is because as your wax is vaporized it will melt and sometimes even leak out into the connections. This can build up gradually over time or get caused by loading too much wax into your chamber. 

Got Vape Crew Fix: Unscrew the heating chamber from your wax pen. Take a cotton swab slightly dampened with 99% isopropyl alcohol and wipe away any sticky resin from the gold battery contact and the bottom of the chamber.

Make sure to take your time and get every last bit of sticky golden wax out of your connections before leaving everything to air day. We recommend checking on your connections every so often even without issues to stay on top of cleaning. 

2. Clean Your Device (Mouthpiece & Chamber)

The next big issue that can pop up is also caused by leaking materials, as you want to inspect your mouthpiece, chamber, and overall vape body to ensure that nothing is gunked up. 

Start by taking the mouthpiece off, some devices include silicone covers that can be physically removed separating the chamber from it's exterior covering. If you can do so, then make sure to fully disassemble like this to make cleaning far easier. 

It's in these tight spots that wax can slowly seep into, creating issues that aren't visible during normal use, only when you actually take the time to disassemble for that deeper inspection. 

Got Vape Crew Fix: Disassemble as much of your wax pen as you can, inspect it all for wax, and then move onto cleaning with the all time classic fix all of isopropyl dampened swabs. Gently scrub away with an isopropyl swab to break down wax and get your components clean again. 

Once everything is clean and left to air day, you can now reassemble your wax pen. Make sure to take a test draw before your first sessions, this way you can test airflow and see if you've missed anything.

3. Load The Proper Amount Of Concentrate

One of the most common beginner errors that leads to a ruined session isn't actually the fault of your wax pen, but instead lies with how you are actually packing the chamber. 

This is because if you load too much wax into your chamber, you'll end up flooding your sessions with too much material leading to reduced efficiency and more leakage (which leads to the clogging issues discussed above). 

A drowned chamber cannot reach vaporization temperature; instead, it will just boil the wax, causing hot spit back to shoot into your mouth and liquid to leak into the battery every time you do so. 

Got Vape Crew Fix: Always load a small amount of concentrate, roughly the size of a single grain of rice, directly onto the center of the chamber. Go slow and repeat with multiple sessions, instead of doing "all at once" and leading to issues. 

While it may seem counter intuitive, this "less is more" approach is one of the most essential elements of getting the most out of your wax pen. 

4. Inspect And Replace Your Chambers

Unlike dry herb vaporizers, the heating coils (or atomizers) in a wax pen are considered consumable parts. Over time, residual wear from your dabs will bake into your materials and end up needing a replacement. 

How often you need to replace your coils ultimately comes down to how well you're cleaning your chamber and how often you're actually dabbing. Thus there's no set timing, but instead the result of your own personal actions. 

Unfortunately when chambers get coated in dark reclaim, they eventually start to produce mixed flavors and have trouble heating up to the correct temperatures you need. 

Got Vape Crew Fix: While you can slightly extend a coil's life by gently swabbing it with a Q-tip after every session, you eventually just need to replace it. Unscrew the old atomizer and screw a fresh one into the base.

Once you get a new chamber in, you'll notice the difference immediately, as a new chamber is going to be a complete night and day improvement over the old one you were struggling with. 

So don't beat yourself up if your chamber has reached the end of its life, instead just look out for a replacement chamber and you'll be able to refresh your wax pen set up with ease. 

5. Master Your Draw Technique

If the wax pen is clean, loaded correctly, and firing normally, then the problem might actually be your drawing technique!

Ripping a wax pen as hard as you can (like a traditional water pipe) is the fastest way to ruin your vapor production.

Pulling too fast creates a vacuum that physically sucks the hot, liquid wax completely off the heating element and splatters it onto the inside walls of the mouthpiece. This ends up wasting your wax and leads to the creation of clods. 

Got Vape Crew Fix: Change your technique to "Sip, Don't Rip." Sip gently from the mouthpiece, taking a long, slow draws. This more mindful approach will allow your wax pen to work as properly and actually hit better. 

Thus if you're doing everything else right, but still aren't getting the type of clouds you want, then we recommend slowing down your roll with more measures, sipping inhales to get the best results with your dabs. 

6. Let Things Fully Heat

While it's easy to take dabbing for granted with how easy wax pens are to use, the reality is that behind the scenes your favorite vaporizer is doing some very heavy lifting to achieve those results. 

As a result, you're going to need to let your wax pen cook (both literally and metaphorically) by ensuring you give it enough time to reach the point of vaporization before you start inhaling. 

This is because when you inhale too quickly you're taking the wind out of your dabs sails, leaving them muted and not fully formed. Think about it like taking a half frozen pizza out of the oven, sure it's warmed but it's not how you actually want to enjoy it. 

Got Vape Crew Fix: Give the device a second to catch up! If your pen has a "Pre-Heat" mode (usually activated by pressing the power button 2x rapidly), run that cycle first. If it doesn't, simply hold the fire button for 2 to 3 seconds to let the wax melt before you put your lips to the mouthpiece.

Make sure to always follow the manufacturer recommendations for sessions while using your wax pen / dab pen, this way you'll know straight from the source how long you should wait for optimal vapor. 

Many wax pens include haptic feedback to let you know when things are ready, but always make sure to use your own judgement and if you don't see vapor pouring out - give it a few more seconds to get to the proper heat. 

7. Check Battery Settings & Flashing Lights

Lastly, as a catch all for your wax pen we recommend giving it a good old fashioned charge. While this may be the "turn it off and on again" of wax pen troubleshooting, the fact of the matter is often times this is all you need. 

Got Vape Crew Fix: Plug your wax pen / dab pen in for a full charging cycle or until the battery has reached 100%. Once you've recharged, test your wax pen to see if the issues are fixed.
