Bongs & Water Pipes

Most people call it a bong. Water pipe and bong describe the same thing, a piece that draws smoke through water to cool and filter it before you inhale. Smaller handheld versions are bubblers.

Enough to cover the downstem slits by about half an inch. Too little and you lose the filtration, too much and you pull water into the mouthpiece. Adjust until the bubbling sounds right.

Beakers hold more water, cool more and sit more stably. Straight tubes clear faster and need less effort to draw. Beakers suit slower sessions, straight tubes suit quick ones.

A percolator splits smoke into smaller bubbles across extra chambers, increasing contact with the water. The result is a cooler, smoother draw, with slightly more resistance when you pull.

Borosilicate glass gives the cleanest taste and lets you see what is happening. Silicone will survive drops that would destroy glass. If the piece travels or lives somewhere it can be knocked over, silicone is the practical choice.

Empty the water, add isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, cover the openings and shake. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Do it weekly with regular use, since residue affects taste quickly.

Smaller pieces under ten inches are easier to store, clean and travel with. Taller pieces give smoke more room to cool. Anything over about eighteen inches becomes awkward to handle for most people.

Usually, as long as the joint size matches. Most pieces here use a 14mm or 18mm joint. Check which one you have before buying a replacement bowl or downstem.
