Glass Pipes & Hand Pipes

The general term is hand pipe or dry pipe. Individual shapes have their own names: a spoon, a sherlock, a steamroller or a chillum. All of them are glass pipes and all work the same way.

The carb is the small hole beside the bowl. Covering it while you light builds smoke in the chamber, releasing it clears that smoke through in one pull. It gives you control over the draw.

A spoon is straight with the bowl at one end. A sherlock curves upward so the bowl sits further from your face, which keeps heat and smoke at a distance. Sherlocks are usually larger.

Borosilicate glass is the preferred material because it adds no taste of its own and handles repeated heat without degrading. The trade off against silicone or metal is that glass breaks when dropped.

Soak in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, shake, then rinse with warm water. A pipe cleaner clears the stem. Clean regularly, since resin affects taste faster in a dry pipe than in a water piece.

A chillum is the simplest pipe there is, a straight tube with a bowl at one end and no carb hole. One draw, nothing to assemble, small enough to disappear in a pocket.

Some do, most do not. A screen stops ash pulling through the stem and is worth adding to any pipe with a wide bowl hole. They cost very little and drop straight in.

A glass spoon. It is the standard shape for a reason, easy to pack, easy to clear and easy to clean, and it is the cheapest way to find out what you like.
