Spoon Pipes

A spoon pipe is a small dry hand pipe with a bowl at one end, a straight stem and a carb hole on the side. It is the most common hand pipe shape and the usual starting point.

Pack the bowl loosely, cover the carb hole with your thumb, light the bowl and draw. Release the carb to clear the smoke through. Packing too tightly is the most common mistake.

Three to four inches fits a pocket easily and is the usual choice. Five inches and up gives more room for the smoke to cool before it reaches you, at the cost of portability.

Fumed glass has a thin layer of vaporized silver or gold worked into it. It changes color as resin builds up inside, so the pipe looks different after a few months than it did new.

Soak it in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, shake, and rinse with warm water. Use a pipe cleaner through the stem. Every week or two keeps the taste clean.

Not always, but a screen helps if the bowl hole is wide enough to let ash through. They are inexpensive and drop straight into the bowl.

Almost always resin build up. A dry pipe has no water to catch anything, so residue accumulates faster than in a water piece. Cleaning usually fixes it completely.

Borosilicate glass handles heat well but will break if dropped on a hard floor. If the pipe travels regularly, a silicone spoon or a padded case is worth having.
