In a rush to get back to your session? Here is a fast breakdown covering the essential steps to diagnosing and fixing your dab rig:

1. Clean Your Banger Joint Connection

If you feel like you are sucking through a blocked straw and the water inside your rig is barely bubbling, these are key indicators that you are most likely dealing with a physical clog. 

As the physical connection point between your dab rig and your banger, these glass joints are an incredibly important cross roads for your vapor. If things are clogged or sticky, issues start to pile up quickly. 

This is because vapor cools rapidly as it enters the rig, sticky reclaim condenses right at this narrow neck. When this resin hardens, it acts like a cork, completely cutting off your airflow.

• Wait for your banger to cool 100% (very important)
• Carefully remove your banger from the dab rig joint.
• Dip a cotton swab directly into isopropyl alcohol.
• Scrub the inside of the glass joint on the rig thoroughly.
• Wipe down the downward stem of the quartz banger itself.
• For heavy clogs, soak the banger completely in ISO before reattaching to restore airflow.

Sticky connections are easy to take care of with the right tools. That's why we always recommend having isopropyl alcohol and some swabs on hand at all times to help with general dab rig cleaning and maintince needs. 

2. Swap Out For Clean Water

Dab rigs use water filtration to cool down hot vapor, but if you leave the same water sitting in your glass for weeks on end, it becomes a massive detriment to your session. 

Old rig water acts as a trap for reclaim, turning cloudy, smelling terrible, and ruining the flavor of your expensive concentrates. Dirty water turns your dab rig from a precision tool, into something much more resembling a swamp. 

So before a wise cracking donkey and ogre move into your dab rig basin, we highly recommend swapping out your water, washing out your interior, and refilling with fresh, clean water.

• Take your rig to the sink at the end of every single session day.
• Dump out the old, stagnant rig water completely.
• Give the glass a quick rinse with warm tap water to flush out any loose material.
• Refill the rig with fresh, clean, room temperature water.
• Test the water level by taking a dry draw to ensure the percolator bubbles smoothly before your next dab.

The best way to handle dab rig water management is to simply make a habit of always dumping out your water after a session. This way you don't let dirty water sit for extended periods of time, as this can lead to fast build up that causes its own issues. 

Instead stay on top of freshening your water and you'll be able to keep your dab rig hitting smooth, clean, and flavorfully. 

3. Wait For Your Banger To Cool

One of the most common dab rig issues that most people don't even realize they're doing is simply over heating your banger. When you don't leave time for your banger to cool, dabs end up being scorched and you end up coughing up a lung. 

If you're consistently ripping dabs that taste burnt and scorch your throat, then this is a big time indicated that you need to let your banger cool more before you drop in your dabs. 

This is because a glowing red hot banger will instantly obliterate the delicate terpenes in your wax, destroying the flavor, leaving a permanent black scorch mark (chazz) on your quartz, and creating incredibly harsh vapor.

• Ignite your butane torch and aim the flame at your quartz banger.
• Heat the bucket evenly until you feel radiant heat, making sure to never let it glow cherry red.
• Turn off your torch and immediately start a timer on your phone.
• Wait 30 to 60 seconds to allow the quartz to cool into the perfect vaporization zone.
• Drop your concentrate into the banger only after this cooldown period is complete for massive, smooth clouds.
• For the most precise heating, seek out a dab thermometer or terp timer. 

This is most certainly a situation where patience pays off, as even waiting just a few seconds for your banger to reach that "sweet spot" will result in far better dabs and clear up any trouble you were having with harsh vapor. 

Make sure to experiment to find out what timing works best for your banger / dab rig set up, this way you'll be able to dial things in to your "optimal" settings and get in the groove where every single dab you fire up hits like a dream. 

4. Use A Carb Cap Properly

If your banger is the perfect temperature but you are still getting weak, wispy clouds that seem to just float away into the room, you are likely missing a crucial accessory: the carb cap.

Vaporizing wax in an open bucket allows the heat to escape instantly. A carb cap acts as a lid, trapping the heat inside the banger, restricting the airflow, and actually lowering the ambient air pressure inside the bucket so your wax can vaporize at a much lower temperature.

• Use your dab tool to drop the concentrate onto the heated quartz floor.
• Immediately place the carb cap securely over the top of the bucket to trap the heat.
• Inhale smoothly and steadily to draw the vapor into the rig.
• If using a directional carb cap, gently spin or tilt it while inhaling to push the hot oil around for full vaporization.

Getting a carb cap is a very simple, yet effective method at maximizing your dab rig vapor production and ensuring that you don't waste anything in the process during your sessions. 

Carb caps are highly cost effective and are able to have an outsized effect on your sessions due to their ingenious vapor trapping design. Simply pop one on top of your banger after dropping in your dabs and you'll experience more control, stronger vapor, and better satisfaction. 

5. Upgrade To A Hot Knife

Are you struggling to get your sticky wax off your metal dab tool and wondering how much money you've wasted simply on lost materials? 

Well this means that you may be due for an upgrade to a hot knife. These battery powered tools allow you to seamlessly melt concentrates into your banger and avoid any loss in the process. 

Remember that scrapping a metal tool violently against the inside of your expensive quartz banger not only scratches the glass but also leaves half your dab stuck to the tool, wasting your stash and making a sticky mess.

• Upgrade to an electric hot knife.
• Use the cold ceramic tip to easily scoop out your desired dab size.
• Hold the loaded tip directly over your heated banger bucket.
• Press the hot knife's heating button and watch the wax slide off effortlessly in just 3 seconds, eliminating all waste.

While metal tools are classic, having a hot knife can seriously improve your overall sessions output and lead to a lot less frustration in the long term. So if you find yourself fighting with your dab tool, consider the upgrade to fix your dab rig issues. 

6. Heat Your Banger Longer (If Too Cold)

On the flip side of a banger that's too hot, you might be dealing with a banger that simply isn't hot enough. If you drop your wax into the bucket and it just sits there bubbling slightly without producing any thick vapor, your quartz is too cold.

When you don't apply your torch long enough, the banger cannot reach the necessary vaporization temperature. This leads to frustrating, muted hits and leaves a pool of wasted, un-vaporized liquid wax sitting at the bottom of your bucket.

• Turn up the flame on your butane torch for maximum, consistent coverage.
• Apply the flame directly to the bottom and lower sides of your quartz bucket.
• Keep the flame moving constantly for a full 30 to 45 seconds.
• Ensure the thick quartz builds up enough thermal energy to hold its temperature.
• Proceed with the standard 30 to 60 second cooldown before dropping in your dab to achieve the right vapor density.

This is another troubleshooting fix that requires a bit of experimentation, as you'll have to figure out the best timing for your particular torch and banger set up. Titanium bangers and smaller torches take longer to heat, so keep this in mind if you have issues. 

7. Get A New Torch

Lastly, if you've tried everything above and you are struggling to get your banger hot enough to melt anything, your heat source is the problem. You cannot heat a thick quartz banger with a standard pocket lighter or a cheap gas station torch.

If your current torch is sputtering, blowing through butane instantly, or taking over two minutes to get your quartz up to temp, it is severely bottlenecking your sessions.

• Purge and refill your old torch with high-quality butane to test if it's simply empty.
• If the flame still fails, discard it and purchase a new butane dab torch.
• Look for features like an adjustable flame, a large butane reservoir, and a reliable ignition switch.
• Use your new, powerful torch to heat your banger evenly and efficiently in 30 seconds or less.

This one is binary, if your dab torch isn't up to snuff don't suffer through it - go get a new one. Life is too short to struggle with a broken dab torch, so do yourself a favor and upgrade to the modern world of heating.
