Before applying any cleaning solutions, it's important to remember that each of the options requires their own particular fine touch to properly and safely maintain them for future sessions. 

Thus you must always identify what kind of tool you're working with and adjust your cleaning process as such. This way you keep you tool in 100% working order and don't end up making any issues worse on accident. 

Traditional Metal Dab Tools:

Hot Knives:

The general rule here is that traditional metal dab tools are more like glassware and are less delicate, while hot knives are more like vaporizers and require more care due to sophisticated internal batteries. 

Why Cleaning Your Dab Tool Matters

While it might seem harmless to leave a little wax on your tool, concentrates are incredibly sticky. Leaving residue unattended allows it to harden into a dark, crusty glue that acts as a magnet for dust, pocket lint, and pet hair.

How Often Should You Clean Your Dab Tool?

One of the best habits you can form is the "post dab wipe." We highly recommend wiping the tip of your tool with a dry tissue or paper towel immediately after every single session while the remaining oil is still warm.

This simple three second habit prevents sticky buildup from ever accumulating in the first place. It does a lot of the heavy lifting for you and ensures that things never have the chance to become a problem in the first place. 

If you forget, or if you're dealing with incredibly messy, runny distillates, you should perform a deeper ISO clean at least once a week to strip the metal or ceramic back to its original, shiny state.

Step 1: The Warm Post Dab Wipe

The absolute easiest way to clean any dab tool is to perform a quick wipe down after your dab, removing any left over wax materials before they ever have the chance to settle in. 

For Metal Tools: Immediately after you gently rub your concentrate off onto your warm quartz banger, take a thick paper towel and wipe the metal tip clean. The ambient heat from the banger keeps the leftover wax in a liquid state, allowing it to wipe off effortlessly.

For Hot Knives: After you drop your dab into the e-rig or banger, hold the button down for one more second to keep the ceramic tip warm. Release the button, and gently wipe the tip with a q-tip / paper towel , pulling outward to slide the warm residue right off.

Doing this is by far the #1 method maintaining your dab tool, ensuring that sticky concentrates are removed at their easiest and making future cleaning sessions a whole lot quicker. 

Step 2: The ISO Soak (Metal Tools Only)

If your traditional metal tool has been sitting out for days and is coated in hard, rock solid reclaim, it's time for an isopropyl soak. This way you can start fresh and get your dab tool back to work like it used to. 

To do so take a small glass dish or a shot glass and fill it with enough  isopropyl alcohol to cover the sticky end of your tool. Drop the metal tool tip down into the ISO and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour. 

After the soak, carefully remove your dab tool and use a paper towel / q-tips to clean the tip off. The high percentage alcohol will have dissolved the hardened resin bonds and made your subsequent cleaning far more effective. 

With a little bit of elbow grease your dab tool will look brand new. Make sure to repeat the process if your tool is double sides or if it's a completely metal tool (without silicone grips) then you can do a full isopropyl bath soak. 

This process will be able to revamp even the dirtiest of hot knives, all while the isopropyl alcohol kills any germs or bacteria along the way. So never give up on your old tool, just break out the ISO and you'll be ready in no time! 

Note: Only ever soak metal dab tools. Never attempt to soak any hot knife or battery powered dab tools in order to avoid damaging your battery. 

Step 3: Deep Cleaning Electric Hot Knives

Because you cannot soak a hot knife, you have to use a more targeted approach to remove stubborn, baked on crusts from your ceramic tip without damaging it in the process.

First, turn the hot knife on and hold the heat button for 2 to 3 seconds to warm up the crusted wax. Release the button and let it cool for a brief moment so it isn't scorching hot.

Next, take a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (squeeze out excess liquid so it doesn't drip into the battery housing!) and gently scrub the ceramic tip to remove left over materials. 

The combination of the residual warmth and the alcohol solvent will break down the crust safely. Repeat with fresh swabs until the white ceramic shines through again.

Remember that most hot knife tips are made out of ceramic and are highly delicate to any sort of force / pressure. So go slow and make sure never to push too hard in order to protect your hot knife during cleaning sessions. 

Step 4: Rinse and Dry Completely

Once you’ve cleaned your dab tools, you must ensure they are completely dry before your next session by leaving everything out for an air day. 

For Metal Tools: Rinse the soaked tip under warm running tap water to flush away the alcohol, then dry it thoroughly with a clean towel.

For Hot Knives: Do not rinse with water! Simply wipe the ceramic tip down with a dry paper towel to soak up any remaining ISO. Then, activate the heating cycle for 3 to 4 seconds into the open air. This quick "burn off" cycle will evaporate any microscopic alcohol fumes left on the ceramic plate safely.

Always make sure your dab tools are 100% air dry before continuing, as any moisture left on them can cause issues with your dabs including popping, sizzling, and wasted materials.
