Because dab rigs use water filtration to cool down extremely hot vapor, sticky golden reclaim condenses rapidly along the inner glass walls and percolators. Over time, this reclaim thickens, hardens, and traps old water.

Without regular maintenance, even top tier dab rigs start to underperform. A dirty banger ruins heat retention, and clogged percolators lead to restricted airflow. In general, a dirty dab rig leads to harsh, burnt flavors, drastically reduced vapor production, and incredibly tight draw resistance.

Maintaining your dab rig is just as important as choosing the right one. Not only will you get better flavor profiles from a clean rig, but you’ll also extend the lifespan of your expensive quartz bangers. So do yourself a favor and stay on top of your cleaning!

Cleaning Tools for a Dab Rig

You don’t need anything complicated to clean your dab rig, but having the right tools makes achieving crystal clear results quick and effortless. So do yourself a favor and make sure to have these on hand before you begin cleaning your dab rig. 

• Isopropyl Alcohol (ISO): The absolute standard for dissolving hardened wax.
• Coarse Salt: Acts as a physical abrasive to scrub the inside of the glass where brushes can’t reach.
• Cotton Swabs (Q-tips): Essential for getting into the corners of the banger bucket and the glass joint.
• Rig Plugs (or paper towels): Used to plug the mouthpiece and joint holes so you can shake the rig without spilling ISO everywhere.
• Small Glass Dish: For soaking your banger, carb cap, and terp pearls.
  

Do yourself a favor and make sure to have these on hand before you begin cleaning your dab rig, this way you’re not fighting an up hill battle and will be able to meaningfully clean your glass without going crazy in the process.

Step 1: Cool Down and Empty Water

First things first, you need to wait for your banger to cool completely and remove the water from your dab rig. 

Never attempt to clean a torch heated banger while it is hot. Hitting scorching hot quartz with room temperature liquid will cause thermal shock, instantly cracking, shattering, and in some cases exploding your expensive glass.

So always wait until your banger is cool to the touch before ever placing it into any sort of cleaning substance. It only takes a quick search on Reddit to see the litany of horror stories that come from ignoring this, so make sure to protect yourself out there.

• Wait at least 15 to 20 minutes after your last dab session.
• Test the ambient heat by holding your hand an inch away from the quartz bucket.
• Once fully cooled, carry your rig over to the sink carefully.
• Pour out all of the old, stagnant rig water through the mouthpiece.
• Give the rig a quick rinse with warm tap water to flush out any loose, floating reclaim chunks.

By waiting for everything to cool and removing the water, you’ve now prepared your dab rig for cleaning in a safe and effective manner. Never rush these steps, as both are imperative to properly cleaning your rig. 

Step 2: Disassemble Your Dab Rig

Next up, carefully take apart all removable components from your dab rig. Glass on glass can get stuck if reclaim has hardened between the joints, so never force or aggressively twist components.

This includes components such as your banger, downstem, percolator, and any other pieces that can be removed from your particular dab rig setup.

• Gently pull the quartz banger straight up and out of the rig’s downstem.
• If the joint is stuck, lightly warm the outside of the glass joint with a hairdryer to loosen the sticky reclaim.
• Remove your carb cap and set it aside on a safe tray.
• Use tweezers to fish out any terp pearls or pillars from inside the banger bucket.
• Place all small glass accessories into a small, sealable container or glass dish so nothing rolls off the table.

Having everything disassembled makes cleaning far more effective and let’s you actually access the hard to reach areas within your dab rig that see the most concentrate build up.  

Step 3: Clean the Banger

As the banger is where your concentrates physically vaporize in a dab rig, this makes it the primary target for your cleaning efforts. 

Keeping the bucket free of black, baked on carbon (chazz) ensures that your banger holds heat evenly for your next session. This also avoids dampened flavors and overall muted performance, all by ensuring your banger is a clean canvas for every session.

• Submerge the cooled quartz banger, carb cap, and terp pearls fully into a dish of isopropyl alcohol.
• Let the components soak undisturbed for 30 to 60 minutes to break down the hardened carbon.
• Remove the banger and use an ISO soaked cotton swab to aggressively scrub the corners of the bucket.
• Run a pipe cleaner down the neck of the banger to push out any clogs.
• Rinse the quartz thoroughly with warm water to remove all alcohol before moving on.

As the beating heart of your dab rig, you’ll want to take your time with your banger to ensure that it’s fully cleaned. Much like cleaning your dishes, any left overs are going to significantly reduce your enjoyment post cleaning. 

That’s why we recommend cleaning your banger with laser precision, looking for any and all concentrate build up to ensure that every time you pack things up, you’re ready for a fresh hard hitting blast. 

Step 4: Clean the Glass Rig (Salt & ISO)

Reclaim collects heavily along the inner walls and percolators of your rig. Because you can’t fit a brush inside complex glass chambers, you must use the power of chemistry and physical abrasion.

• Pour a generous amount of coarse epsom salt directly into the mouthpiece of your empty rig.
• Pour 99% isopropyl alcohol into the rig until the bottom chamber is about one-third full.
• Plug the mouthpiece and the banger joint tightly with silicone rig plugs (or twisted paper towels).
• Shake the rig vigorously for 2 to 3 minutes, allowing the salt to scrub the glass walls and percolators clean.
• Pour out the dirty brown ISO mixture and rinse the rig repeatedly with warm tap water until the glass sparkles.

The key here is to sit back and let your isopropyl alcohol do the heavy lifting for you. As it takes time for isopropyl and salt to work, you want to ensure that you leave plenty of time for things to soak. 

If you’ve got a really dirty dab rig, we ever recommend letting it soak overnight or all day long. This way you ensure the maximum amount of materials are broken down and your subsequent wipe down will be easy. 

Always wash everything out with water post soak and get every last bit of epsom salt removed from the interior. Using the sink is a great tool, just be careful not to lose grip on the dab rig in the process. 

Step 5: Let Everything Fully Dry

Once you’ve cleaned and rinsed all parts of your dab rig, you MUST leave ample time for every component to dry COMPLETELY. This is because any left over isopropyl can end up tainting your flavor and ruining the experience. 

As a result air drying your dab rig and it’s various accessories is one step that you absolutely cannot skip.

• Place the glass rig and the quartz banger onto a dry, clean towel.
• Do not attempt to accelerate the drying process by applying a butane torch to wet glass.
• Ensure no water droplets remain trapped inside the neck of the banger.
• Let everything air dry in a well ventilated space for at least 30 to 60 minutes.
• Deep cleaning at night and letting the rig air dry overnight is the best habit for complete peace of mind.

Simply find a safe location, place a towel, and then leave everything to dry. While this can take a little while, it’s paramount to your cleaning success and will leave your dab rig ready to go at 100% once dry. 

Step 6: Reassemble and Run a Burn Off

Once every piece is bone dry and free of moisture, reassemble your setup carefully. Before dropping in your expensive live rosin, perform a quick burn off cycle to ensure the quartz is totally pure.

• Slide the pristine quartz banger back into the glass joint securely.
• Apply your butane torch to the quartz bucket for 5 to 10 seconds.
• This light heat cycle will burn off any microscopic lint or residual ISO that survived the rinse.
• Let the banger cool to your ideal dabbing temperature, load your wax, and enjoy pure, flavorful hits!

Now that you’ve gone through the process, it’s time to rip some dabs and enjoy your completely refreshed dab rig! 

Quick Cleaning vs. Deep Cleaning

Not every session with your dab rig requires a full ISO and salt breakdown. Keep maintenance simple by separating your workflow into two quick routines:

Quick Cleaning (After Each Dab):

• Swab leftover liquid oil out of the banger bucket with a dry cotton swab while it is still warm.
• Use an ISO dipped swab on the bucket for stubborn residue.
• Dump and replace your rig water at the end of the day.

Deep Cleaning (Every 1–2 Weeks):

• Full disassembly of the banger, carb cap, and pearls.
• Salt and ISO shake for the main glass rig to clear percolators.
• Extended ISO soaking for the quartz bucket to remove dark chazz.

Staying consistent with quick swab outs after sessions dramatically reduces how often you need to perform heavy deep cleans, so always keep a box of Q-tips at your dabbing station.
